Earlier Report Observations
The domestic market for fresh papayas in Mexico experienced fluctuations between 2018 and 2023, largely driven by shifts in export volumes. In 2019, the market size dipped to 984 thousand tons as growing external demand, particularly from the United States, led to a significant increase in exports. This trend reversed in 2020 when the market grew to 1,028 thousand tons, supported by a 3.2% rise in national production fueled by improved crop yields and expanded cultivated area.
A sharp surge in exports to 184 thousand tons in 2021 drew supply away from the domestic market, reducing its size to 951 thousand tons despite a modest production increase. The market recovered to 995 thousand tons in 2022 as production reached a peak of 1,196 thousand tons. This growth was aided by the adoption of new papaya varieties with higher yields and better resistance, which enhanced overall productivity.
In 2023, the domestic market contracted to 949 thousand tons following a decline in production. While international demand remained strong and cultivation expanded to new markets like Australia and China, production volumes eased from the previous year's high, leading to a smaller domestic supply.
