This expansion was interrupted in 2023, when production dropped to 447.1 thousand tons and market volume fell to 451.8 thousand tons.

The growth through 2022 was supported by rising consumer awareness of the health benefits of duck meat, which encouraged higher consumption among health-conscious populations. Additionally, increasing demand for ready-to-cook and ready-to-consume duck meat products reflected a shift toward convenience in consumer lifestyles. In 2022, the Singapore-based company Meatiply introduced cultivated duck meat products, marking the entry of innovative alternatives and signaling diversification in the market.

Imports into the region rose significantly over the period, from 6.7 thousand tons in 2020 to 42.9 thousand tons in 2024, indicating growing reliance on foreign supply or consumption beyond domestic production. Exports remained relatively stable, averaging around 9 thousand tons annually from 2020 onward.

In 2020, production reached 459.1 thousand tonnes, marking a modest 3.1% increase compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 5.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.7%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 407.8 thousand tonnes, which saw the largest decline of 15.7%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the largest increase of 9.2%.

The market exhibited volatility during the observed period. In 2019, exports hit their lowest point at 3 241 tonnes, with the largest decline of 40.5%. By 2020, exports surged to 8 298 tonnes, reflecting a significant 156.0% increase from the previous year and marking the peak for the period. The amplitude between the peak in 2020 and the trough in 2019 was 2.6 times.

From 2017 to 2020, Japan, Hong Kong, and China were the primary destinations for fresh or chilled duck meat exports from South-eastern Asia. Japan accounted for 56.5% of exports in kind, Hong Kong for 7.8%, and China for 5.1%, collectively representing 69.4% of total export flows.
