Earlier Report Observations

The market for fresh or chilled duck meat in Germany entered the period at nearly 70,000 t in 2018, heavily reliant on imports which dominated poultry shipments. A sustained decline in domestic production, noted from earlier comparisons, contributed to a shrinking market volume, falling to 51,909 t by 2020. Price disparities between organic and conventional poultry, with organic duck meat being significantly more expensive, likely influenced consumer demand and purchasing patterns during this contraction.

A temporary resurgence in market size to 57,115 t occurred in 2021, supported by steadily growing global consumption of duck meat and eggs, which bolstered demand. This rebound was short-lived, as the market volume fell again to around 48,250 t in 2022. The market then stabilized near 48,270 t in 2023, with demand exhibiting strong seasonal peaks during winter months, as reported by consumer panels.

Structural preparations for new regulations began with the introduction of a voluntary origin labeling system for unpackaged meat in 2022. This evolved into mandatory origin labeling for fresh, chilled, and frozen unpackaged poultry meat from February 2024, followed by a mandatory five-tier animal husbandry labeling system from July 2024. Concurrently, rising consumer prices for fresh poultry meat and a persistent import surplus for poultry highlighted ongoing cost pressures and import dependency within the sector.
