Fresh grapes market in Western Asia

From 2018 to 2023, the fresh grape market in Western Asia experienced notable fluctuations. Production rose from 5 366 thousand metric tons in 2018 to 6 194 thousand metric tons in 2020, before dropping to 5 582 thousand metric tons in 2021. It recovered to 6 098 thousand metric tons in 2022, then declined again to 5 116 thousand metric tons in 2023. Market volume followed a similar pattern, peaking at 6 099 thousand metric tons in 2020 and falling to 5 067 thousand metric tons in 2023.

In 2024, imports of fresh grapes reached 164 thousand metric tons, while exports stood at 139 thousand metric tons. During this year, several developments aimed at boosting local production and export capacity emerged. Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture offered an investment opportunity to establish a dedicated grape city in the Al-Baha region, targeting increased domestic output and food security. Meanwhile, Egypt, a major regional producer, secured access to the Vietnamese market for its grape exports after five years of negotiations, and continued to adopt modern farming techniques such as protected cultivation and improved packaging, enhancing the quality and competitiveness of its grapes.

Fresh grape production in Western Asia has grown for the second year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 6 194 K t of fresh grapes, marking a 2.8% increase from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 12.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 3.9%. The lowest production level was in 2018 at 5 366 K t, which saw the largest decline of 2.8%. In contrast, 2019 recorded the biggest increase at 12.3%.

Following two years of growth, fresh grape production in Western Asia saw a slight dip in value. In 2020, the output was valued at 5 676 M $ US, down 1.2% from the prior year. Over the 2017-2020 period, however, production value increased by 25.1%, averaging 7.7% per year. The peak value occurred in 2019 at 5 742 M $ US, with the largest increase of 25.1% recorded in 2018.

Fresh grape exports from Western Asia have risen for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 250.8 K t, showing a solid 19.8% increase compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports overall decreased by 8.4%, with an average annual decline of 2.9%. The lowest export volume was in 2018 at 169.5 K t, which also saw the largest drop of 38.1%. The biggest increase occurred in 2019 at 23.5%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus were the top buyers of fresh grapes from Western Asia, accounting for 62.3% of total exports in volume. Russia led with 47.4%, followed by Ukraine at 10.6%, and Belarus at 4.2%.

Fresh grape exports from Western Asia have grown in value for the second year running. In 2020, exports amounted to 229.8 M $ US, a notable 15.2% rise from the year before. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value increased by 2.1%, averaging 0.7% per year. The lowest value was in 2018 at 179.4 M $ US, which experienced the largest decline of 20.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, Russia, Ukraine, and Germany were the key partners for fresh grape exports from Western Asia in value terms, making up 58.3% of total flows. Russia accounted for 47.5%, Ukraine for 6.9%, and Germany for 3.9%.

Fresh grape imports into Western Asia have increased for the second straight year. In 2020, imports stood at 156.5 K t, reflecting a strong 19.3% gain over the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports grew by 9.6%, with an average annual rate of 3.1%. The lowest import volume was in 2018 at 121.1 K t, which saw the largest decrease of 15.2%.

During 2017-2020, imports in volume were fairly balanced across partners rather than concentrated. India, Egypt, and South Africa together represented 42.1% of total flows, with India at 18.7%, Egypt at 12.0%, and South Africa at 11.5%. Many other countries accounted for the remaining 57.9%.

Fresh grape imports into Western Asia have risen in value for the second year in a row. In 2020, imports totaled 251.4 M $ US, up 5.7% from the prior year. Over the 2017-2020 period, import value increased by 10.7%, averaging 3.4% per year. The lowest value was in 2018 at 223.1 M $ US, which had the largest decline of 1.8%. The biggest increase occurred in 2019 at 6.6%.
