Earlier Report Observations

The volume of the fresh grapes market in Sub-Saharan Africa remained relatively stable from 2018 to 2023, fluctuating between 1 639 and 1 775 thousand tonnes. Market value, however, showed a clearer upward trend, rising from 2 969 million US dollars in 2018 to 3 719 million US dollars in 2023 despite temporary dips.

In 2023, a 20-30% increase in field purchase prices for grapes in South Africa drove the market value up by 13.8%. This was accompanied by an industry shift towards new grape cultivars such as Sweet Celebration and Autumn Crisp, which enhanced product quality and market appeal. Additionally, strong export performance to counter-seasonal markets like the European Union and Middle East supported overall market activity.
