The market for apples, pears and quinces in Sub-Saharan Africa expanded from 796 thousand tons in 2018 to 1 060 thousand tons in 2020. This initial growth was supported by the development of the deciduous fruit industry in South Africa, a key regional producer, which gained approval to export pears to China in 2018, opening a significant new outlet for production.

Market volume experienced fluctuations after 2020, dipping to 993 thousand tons in 2021 before rising again to 1 124 thousand tons in 2022. These movements corresponded with changes in regional production and trade patterns during the period.

In 2023, the market volume decreased to 1 079 thousand tons. This coincided with increased import costs for fruits and high reefer container shipping expenses, which placed pressure on supply chains. Furthermore, sharp price increases for pears and apples on some African markets in 2024 highlighted ongoing shifts in market conditions.

Sub-Saharan Africa's production of apples, pears, and quinces has grown for the second year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 1 459 thousand tons, marking a moderate increase of 9.8% compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 6.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.1%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 1 253 thousand tons, which also saw the largest decline of 8.7%.

The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 1 178 million US dollars, with the largest decline that year at 8.7%. In contrast, 2019 saw the largest increase of 28.7%.

In 2020, Sub-Saharan Africa exported 527.2 thousand tons of apples, pears, and quinces, showing a moderate uptick of 7.2% compared to the previous year. However, over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 15.9%, with an annualized decline of 5.6%. The lowest export volume was in 2019 at 491.9 thousand tons, while the highest was in 2018 at 627.0 thousand tons. The largest decline occurred in 2019, dropping by 21.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, the export structure for apples, pears, and quinces from Sub-Saharan Africa was diversified. The top three destinations—the United Kingdom (14.6% of exports in kind), the Netherlands (8.3%), and Russia (8.2%)—together accounted for just 31.1% of total flows, with no single country holding a clearly dominant position.

In 2020, Sub-Saharan Africa's exports of apples, pears, and quinces reached 601.9 million US dollars, up 7.3% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 2.2%, with an annualized growth rate of 0.7%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 561.0 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 4.8%.

After two years of growth, Sub-Saharan Africa's imports of apples, pears, and quinces declined in 2020. The region imported 171.1 thousand tons, indicating a strong decrease of 24.8% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 9.1%, with an average annual decline of 3.1%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 171.1 thousand tons, while the largest increase occurred in 2018, rising by 19.9%.

Following a two-year decline, Sub-Saharan Africa's imports of apples, pears, and quinces increased in 2020. The region imported 187.4 million US dollars worth of these fruits, marking a significant improvement of 11.7% over the prior year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports grew by 11.1%, with an annualized rate of 3.6%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 167.7 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 0.5%.

During 2017-2020, France (4.0% of imports in value terms), Portugal (2.9%), and Spain (2.4%) were key suppliers of apples, pears, and quinces to Sub-Saharan Africa. However, their combined share reached only 9.3% of total imports in value terms, with the remaining 90.7% spread across many other trading partners.
