Earlier Report Observations

The fresh grape market in India grew consistently in volume from 2.76 million tonnes in 2018 to 3.48 million tonnes in 2023. This expansion was primarily driven by concerted government and cooperative support for export-oriented production. The establishment of major exporter cooperatives like 'Mahagrapes', backed by state agricultural boards, helped channel quality grapes to international markets. Concurrently, the widespread adoption of modern packhouses with forced-air cooling and the implementation of the GrapeNet traceability system from 2020 onwards strengthened India's compliance with stringent international food safety standards, facilitating greater market access.

Growth continued through 2022 and 2023, with production reaching 3.74 million tonnes. The entry of new players and the rise of Karnataka as a significant production hub diversified the supply base. Strong demand from European countries, particularly the Netherlands, fueled export growth even as global freight cost disruptions from Red Sea delays presented challenges. Government policy increasingly focused on value addition, with considerations in Maharashtra to boost the grape processing and wine industry, which supported overall market development and helped mitigate risks of seasonal gluts.
