Earlier Report Observations

The European fresh cherry market saw notable fluctuations in volume from 2018 to 2022. Market size initially declined from 1 985 thousand tons in 2018 to 1 758 thousand tons in 2019, then recovered steadily to reach a peak of 2 002 thousand tons in 2022. In value terms, the market experienced a sharp rise to 161.5 billion US dollars in 2020, followed by a gradual decrease to 142.3 billion US dollars in 2022.

In 2023, market volume fell to 1 881 thousand tons, while value dropped significantly to 92.6 billion US dollars. This decline was primarily driven by lower cherry yields in key producing countries like Germany, where unfavorable weather conditions reduced harvests. Simultaneously, consumer preferences shifted towards imported sweet cherries and organic products, increasing reliance on external supplies. By 2024, severe spring frosts and hailstorms in regions such as Bavaria caused further production losses, tightening supply and supporting higher prices for quality cherries across Europe.
