The fonio market in Senegal began at 3,899 t in 2018 and grew strongly to 6,721 t by 2020. This initial expansion was supported by the establishment of the Compagnie Africaine Agroalimentaire (CAA) in 2018, a dedicated processor and supplier of fonio, and by agricultural research from ISRA that homologated new fonio varieties to improve yields and nutritional quality.

After the rapid growth, market volume stabilized around 6,600 t in 2021 and 2022, showing only minor fluctuations.

A sharp increase to 9,310 t occurred in 2023, primarily due to CAA significantly boosting its production capacity with a new plant capable of over 3 t per shift and developing innovative processing techniques. This period also saw preparations for the launch of the pre-cooked fonio brand Findi, aimed at broadening consumer appeal. Furthermore, public policies integrating fonio into the national Agropoles development program and a growing consumer shift towards local, nutritious foods provided additional market support.

Senegal's fonio production grew for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 6,761 tonnes of fonio, marking a 31.2% increase compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 75.3%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 20.6%.

Exports fonio from Senegal

The data shows irregular fluctuations, pointing to a volatile market environment. Exports reached their lowest point in 2018 at 22.7 tonnes and peaked in 2019 at 124.1 tonnes, with a 5.5-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Senegal's fonio exports amounted to 39.6 tonnes, representing a sharp decline of 68.1% compared to the previous year. The largest increase occurred in 2019, with a jump of 447.3%.
