The fluorspar market in Kazakhstan contracted sharply from 90.4 thousand tons in 2018 to just 3.6 thousand tons in 2022, with the most severe drop occurring in the final year. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 disrupted supply chains and altered industrial demand, accelerating the decline. This was compounded in 2022 by global raw material price volatility and widespread logistics bottlenecks, which further constrained market activity.

Despite earlier development of mining at the Badamskoye deposit and state-backed support for the industry, domestic production fell steeply over the period. Kazakhstan maintained its role as a key regional exporter, particularly to Russia, but rising export volumes did not offset the overall reduction in market size.

Kazakhstan's fluorspar production declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 74.5 thousand tons of fluorspar, marking a 15.1% year-over-year decrease. Between 2017 and 2020, production fell by 25.5%, which translates to an annualized decline of 9.3%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018, with no significant change from the previous year.

Exports fluorspar from Kazakhstan

In 2020, Kazakhstan's fluorspar export volume totaled 12 402 tons, showing a notable decline of 13.3% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2018 to 2020, exports increased by 12.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.0%. The peak export volume was in 2019 at 14 312 tons, which also saw the largest increase of 29.9%.

After a two-year gain, Kazakhstan's fluorspar import volume declined. In 2020, Kazakhstan imported 1 658 tons of fluorspar, indicating a drop of 36.4% year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 8%, equating to an annualized decline of 2.7%. The maximum import volume was recorded in 2019 at 1 658 tons, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 22.1%.

Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports increased by 12.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of 3.9%. The peak value was in 2019 at 525 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 64.7%.
