The fluorspar market in MERCOSUR opened the period at 56 146 t in 2018. A decline to 52 761 t in 2019 coincided with persistent environmental restrictions in China, which tightened global supply and supported prices. The market then contracted sharply to 42 450 t in 2020, directly due to the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting global supply chains and temporarily lowering industrial demand.

A robust recovery to 54 146 t occurred in 2021, driven by rebounding demand from key consuming sectors like steel, aluminum, and fluorochemical production, alongside emerging applications in lithium-ion battery technology. The market volume eased to 51 388 t in 2022, a period characterized globally by sustained demand and new mining investments in regions like Vietnam and Mongolia to diversify supply away from China.

The later years saw continued evolution of the global fluorspar landscape. In 2023, China reduced import tariffs on fluorspar to encourage domestic stockpiling. A significant regulatory change arrived in 2024 with the EU's Regulation 2024/573, which imposes quantitative limits on hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), directly affecting future fluorspar demand for refrigerant manufacturing and influencing trade patterns relevant to MERCOSUR.

Fluorspar production in MERCOSUR has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 29 530 tons of fluorspar, marking a modest 8.9% decrease compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production fell by 21.7%, which translates to an average annual decline of 7.8%.

After two years of growth, foreign fluorspar supplies to MERCOSUR declined. In 2020, imports amounted to 12 920 tons, down 36.6% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 28%, with a compound annual growth rate of -10.4%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 20 362 tons, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 with a 12.1% rise.
