The market's upward trajectory experienced interruptions due to external shocks. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 disrupted supply chains and altered demand, leading to a temporary contraction to 1 977 tons. Subsequently, geopolitical tensions and Western sanctions in 2022 created instability in trade flows, contributing to another decline that year.

Despite these setbacks, the core driver of healthy nutrition remained strong, prompting a sharp recovery to 2 937 tons in 2021 and supporting further growth in 2023. Ongoing state procurement programs and a strategic focus on promoting domestic production provided additional stability to the market throughout the period.

Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 3.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.2%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 917 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 18.5%.

Export volumes showed significant fluctuations during the period. In 2019, exports hit their lowest point at 179 tonnes, before surging to 365 tonnes in 2020, representing a sharp increase of 103.8% year-over-year. This resulted in a two-fold variation between the high in 2020 and the low in 2019. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 35.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, Romania, Turkey, and France were the core markets for exports in kind, accounting for 60.7% of total flows. Romania led with 33.3% of exports, followed by Turkey at 20.5%, and France at 6.9%.

Over the 2017-2020 period, imports increased by 76.5%, with an average annual growth rate of 20.8%. The peak was in 2019 at 1 303 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 49.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Spain, Turkey, and Sri Lanka consistently served as the main sources for imports in kind, together accounting for 62.8% of total flows. Spain led with 38.7% of imports, followed by Turkey at 16.5%, and Sri Lanka at 7.5%.
