In 2018-2019, fig production in Lebanon faced a reduction in cultivated area due to the spread of tobacco farming in the southern regions, which replaced thousands of fig trees. However, revival efforts through planting branches from productive trees and the development of cooperatives for marketing and delivery to processing plants helped raise production to 4 066 tons in 2019. The market volume remained stable at around 3 900 tons, as increased production was accompanied by higher exports.

From 2020 to 2022, the fig market volume declined to 3 648 tons in 2021 but recovered to 3 811 tons in 2022. Production fluctuated within the range of 3 970-4 005 tons during these years.

In 2023, production fell sharply to 3 646 tons, pulling the market volume down to 3 657 tons. During this period, global demand for fresh figs grew due to consumer preference for healthy foods high in potassium, creating potential export opportunities despite the domestic production drop.

In 2020, Lebanon produced 3 978 tonnes of figs, marking a slight decrease of 2.2% from 2019. Production reached its lowest point in 2018 at 3 868 tonnes, while 2019 saw the highest output at 4 066 tonnes. The most significant decline occurred in 2018 with a 3.3% drop, whereas 2019 experienced the largest increase at 5.1%.

Lebanon's fig exports grew for the third year in a row in 2020, reaching 397.6 tonnes—an 11.1% increase compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports surged by 631.8%, translating to a compound annual growth rate of 94.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, the United Arab Emirates (36.8% of export volume), Qatar (30.7%), and Kuwait (17.0%) were the primary destinations for Lebanon's fig exports, collectively accounting for 84.5% of total shipments.

Lebanon's fig export value continued its upward trend for the third consecutive year in 2020, totaling 424.0 thousand US dollars—a substantial 25.0% rise from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, export value increased by 76.1%, averaging an annual growth rate of 20.8%.

During the 2017–2020 period, the United Arab Emirates (29.4% of export value), Qatar (28.9%), and Kuwait (18.8%) led as the top markets for Lebanon's fig exports in monetary terms, together making up 77.1% of total flows.

Imports figs to Lebanon

Lebanon's fig imports rose for the second straight year in 2020, amounting to 179.8 tonnes—a 21.0% increase over the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 4.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.6%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 92.5 tonnes, which also saw the sharpest decline of 46.0%. In contrast, 2019 posted the largest increase at 60.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Turkey (48.7% of import volume), Syria (29.3%), and Egypt (19.2%) consistently topped the list of sources for Lebanon's fig imports, jointly representing 97.2% of total incoming shipments.
