The launch of the National Agriculture Strategy 2020-2025 in 2020 introduced priorities and interventions to strengthen the agricultural sector, supporting stable watermelon production and influencing export prospects through an emphasis on quality control and linkages to regional food security. However, Lebanon's financial crisis in 2021 weakened agricultural financing and highlighted an aging workforce, contributing to a 2.2% drop in production and a sharp 78.5% decline in exports that year.

Following minor market volume adjustments in 2022 and 2023, the sector faced extreme local price increases for watermelons in 2024, with prices rising up to 500% compared to the previous year due to high inflation and economic conditions, reflecting pressure on consumer demand and trade activity.

Lebanon's watermelon production has grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 66 804 tons of watermelons, marking a 0.6% increase from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 4.3%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 1.4%.

Exports watermelons from Lebanon

Lebanon's watermelon exports have increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 1 790 tons, representing a 7.6% rise compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports surged by 523.9%, averaging an annual growth rate of 84.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Kuwait remained the primary destination for Lebanon's watermelon exports, accounting for 71.7% of total export volumes. Other markets played a much smaller role during this period.
