Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the domestic market volume for extracts and juices of meat, fish and aquatic invertebrates in South America grew from 763 t to 943 t. This increase was supported by the strong expansion of aquaculture in Brazil, where annual growth reached 5.6%, with tilapia becoming the main cultivated species. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 disrupted international logistics and reduced export volumes, which made more product available for local consumption.

After 2020, the market expanded rapidly, reaching 2 435 t by 2023. The sharp rise to 1 722 t in 2021 was driven by post-pandemic recovery and the implementation of new traceability and labeling policies that encouraged domestic sales. Stricter export regulations, including the LPCO license and IBAMA permits for CITES-listed species, contributed to retaining a larger share of production within the region.

Growth was further sustained by the continued expansion of the aquaculture sector, the entry of new market players, and rising investments in processing technology. Consumer preference shifted towards certified and sustainable products, which supported the development of new processed segments and added-value offerings. By 2024, Brazil's national fish production had reached 1.35 million t, highlighting the sector's ongoing strength.
