The Hungarian embroidery market demonstrated significant scale in 2019, with a market size of $7.5 million. This period was supported by the enduring appeal of regional traditions and the 2012 UNESCO recognition of Matyó embroidery as intangible cultural heritage, which bolstered consumer interest and encouraged product development featuring traditional motifs.

From 2020 onward, the market contracted sharply, with the size falling to $4.2 million in 2021 and $2.9 million in 2022. While the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021 shifted some consumer preference towards supporting local crafts, this was outweighed by a major decline in import volumes. The market was further impacted in 2022 by legislative changes to the KATA small-business tax regime, which created operational challenges for craft sector participants.

By 2024, the market size had stabilized at a lower level of $2.6 million. Imports continued to trend downward through 2025, while domestic production showed modest fluctuations without a clear recovery path.

Exports embroidery from Hungary

The market exhibited volatility during the observed period. Export volumes reached their lowest point in 2019 at 16.3 t, then peaked in 2020 at 126.9 t, marking a 7.8-fold increase. From 2018 to 2021, Italy and Slovakia remained the primary destinations for Hungary's embroidery exports in kind, jointly accounting for 81.8% of total flows, while other partners individually contributed much less significantly.

After two consecutive years of decline, Hungary's cross-border embroidery shipments rebounded. Exports in value terms reached their lowest point in 2020 at 436 K $ US, with the largest decline of 13.6% recorded in 2019. In 2021, Hungary exported 687 K $ US of embroidery, corresponding to a dramatic 57.6% increase over the previous year. Between 2018 and 2021, exports grew by 19.9%, equating to an annualized rate of 6.2%.

Hungary's embroidery imports declined for the second consecutive year. The maximum value was recorded in 2019 at 6 582 K $ US, with the largest increase of 6.5% also in 2019. The largest decline occurred in 2020 at 35.7%. In 2021, imports amounted to 3 800 K $ US, down by 10.2% from 2020. Between 2018 and 2021, imports decreased by 38.5%, equating to an annualized decline of 15.0%.
