By 2024, the market was influenced by growing health and wellness awareness, which boosts demand for fresh produce, and by technological innovations such as automated farming systems that optimize production. Changing consumption patterns toward convenient and plant-based options also supported demand for fresh and chilled brassicas.

Southern Europe's edible brassicas production has grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 2 816 thousand tonnes, marking a 3.0% increase from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production rose by 11.6%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 3.7%.

Edible brassicas production in Southern Europe has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 3 613 million US dollars, up 15.3% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 26.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 8.2%.

Exports edible brassicas from Southern Europe

Exports in kind, K t

Southern Europe exported 730.2 thousand tonnes of edible brassicas in 2020, a slight increase of 0.6% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 5.5%, averaging 1.8% per year. The highest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 746.8 thousand tonnes, following a 7.9% increase that year. In contrast, 2019 saw the largest decline of 2.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands were the top destinations for edible brassicas exports from Southern Europe, accounting for 22.5%, 17.8%, and 10.5% of exports in kind, respectively. Together, these three countries made up 50.8% of total export flows.

Edible brassicas exports from Southern Europe have risen for the third year in a row. In 2020, exports reached 937.1 million US dollars, up 12.7% from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, export value increased by 19.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 6.2%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands contributed the most to edible brassicas export value from Southern Europe, with shares of 23.2%, 22.1%, and 10.6%, respectively. Combined, these three markets accounted for 55.9% of total export value.

Imports edible brassicas to Southern Europe

In 2020, Southern Europe imported 97.8 thousand tonnes of edible brassicas, a decrease of 10.4% from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, imports fell by 10.9%, averaging a decline of 3.8% per year. The largest increase occurred in 2019, with a rise of 6.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, edible brassicas imports into Southern Europe came from a diverse range of markets. The Netherlands, France, and Germany were the leading suppliers, accounting for 17.8%, 9.0%, and 8.0% of imports in kind, respectively. Together, they represented 34.8% of total imports, while numerous smaller destinations made up the remaining 65.2%.

In 2020, Southern Europe's edible brassicas imports totaled 117.2 million US dollars, down 6.3% from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, import value increased by 13.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.2%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 99.5 million US dollars, while the highest was in 2019 at 125.0 million US dollars, following a significant increase of 25.7% that year.

During 2017 to 2020, edible brassicas imports into Southern Europe in value terms were distributed across many markets. The Netherlands, France, and Germany were the top contributors, with shares of 18.8%, 11.9%, and 10.0%, respectively. Together, these three countries accounted for 40.8% of total import value.
