Earlier Report Observations

The frozen sweetcorn market in Southern Europe showed considerable volatility between 2018 and 2023. Market volume declined from 186.3 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 173.2 thousand tonnes in 2019, then surged to 220.3 thousand tonnes in 2020. A sharp contraction followed in 2021 to 132.6 thousand tonnes, with a further slight decrease to 127.4 thousand tonnes in 2022, before recovering to 143.4 thousand tonnes in 2023.

The market rebound in 2023 was supported by shifting consumer patterns in Spain, where busier lifestyles and an increase in working professionals boosted demand for convenient, ready‑to‑eat frozen foods. A growing preference for healthy and plant‑based diets also favored frozen sweetcorn as a practical ingredient. Geopolitical tensions, including the Russia‑Ukraine conflict, contributed to higher import costs and price increases, but strong retail and foodservice demand sustained market growth.
