Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the market volume for fresh pumpkins, squash and gourds in Southern Europe grew from 1 048 thousand tonnes to 1 226 thousand tonnes, with a notable peak in 2020. In value terms, the increase was even more pronounced, rising to 1 390 million US dollars in 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic that year introduced volatility in prices and supply chain disruptions, which contributed to higher market values while overall consumption volume also expanded.

After 2020, market volume experienced a slight contraction, falling to 1 141 thousand tonnes in 2022, yet the market's value continued to climb, reaching 1 494 million US dollars. During this period, the celebration of Halloween in Italy created a new market segment for carved pumpkins, boosting demand for specific varieties. Advances in individual quick freezing technology also enhanced the quality of frozen pumpkin products, supporting the processed segment.

In 2023, market volume recovered to 1 167 thousand tonnes, with value rising to 1 556 million US dollars. Climatic anomalies including hailstorms reduced the availability of Italian pumpkins by 20%, but increased imports helped maintain total supply. The Italian market further responded by extending its sales calendar throughout winter and diversifying its offerings. By 2024, consumer preference in Italy shifted towards smaller pumpkins for easier handling, while ongoing innovation in pumpkin-based drinks and desserts continued to stimulate demand.
