Between 2018 and 2023, the market volume for fresh edible brassicas in Japan contracted from 1 766 thousand tons to 1 640 thousand tons. This overall decline was primarily driven by a sharp, sustained drop in imports, which fell from 127 thousand tons to 15 thousand tons over the same period, while domestic production remained relatively stable between 1 628 and 1 678 thousand tons.

Imports began to recover significantly in 2024 and surged to 91 thousand tons in 2025. This rebound coincided with increased production costs for domestic growers due to global trade frictions and U.S. tariff hikes affecting agricultural inputs, making imported products more competitive. Simultaneously, growing consumer health awareness and a shift toward plant-based diets boosted overall demand for brassicas, supporting the rise in import volumes.

Over the 2018-2021 period, production grew by 2.3%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 0.8%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2020 at 1 630 K t, which also saw the largest decline of 2.0%.

From 2018 to 2021, Hong Kong and Singapore were the dominant buyers of edible brassicas from Japan, together accounting for 90.4% of total exports in volume. Other destinations each held relatively small shares.

The market exhibited volatility during these years. Import levels fluctuated significantly, with a 2.4-fold difference between the peak in 2020 and the low in 2019. In 2021, Japan's cross-border shipments of edible brassicas reached 3 005 K $ US, a decrease of 10.6% from the previous year.
