The Japanese market for fresh or chilled peas saw notable volatility between 2018 and 2023. After growing to a peak of 27 257 tons in 2019, total market volume entered a sustained decline, falling to 21 545 tons by the end of the period. This represented a contraction of over 20% from the high point, marking a significant shift in supply conditions.

Domestic production mirrored this downward trend, decreasing from 26 300 tons in 2019 to 21 100 tons in 2023. Concurrently, imports, which had previously supplemented the market with around 900 to 950 tons annually, underwent a sharp reduction, plummeting to 482 tons in 2022 and 445 tons in 2023. The combined drop in local output and foreign supply drove the overall market contraction during these years.

In 2021, Japan produced 25,400 tonnes of peas, marking a slight year-over-year increase of 1.2%. Production reached its lowest point in 2020 at 25,100 tonnes, while the peak was recorded in 2019 with 26,300 tonnes. The most significant decline occurred in 2020, dropping by 4.6%, whereas the largest increase was observed in 2019, rising by 3.1%.

The lowest value was recorded in 2020 at 4,478 thousand US dollars, with the largest decline that year at 10.2%.
