By 2024, the market environment was influenced by several key developments. Growing consumer preferences for healthy eating and plant-based diets increased demand for vegetables. At the same time, rising prices for white cabbage reflected tighter domestic supply and import dynamics, while shifts in the geography of vegetable imports from countries like Turkey and Poland affected availability. Retail competition also intensified, with supermarkets focusing on fresh produce presentation to stimulate sales.

Ukraine's edible brassicas production volume increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 1 779 K t of edible brassicas, up 1.4% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 2.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of 0.9%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 1 672 K t, which represented a decline of 3.5% that year. The largest increase occurred in 2019, with production rising by 5.0%.

Exports edible brassicas to Ukraine

The market exhibited volatility during the observed period. Exports reached their lowest point in 2017 and peaked in 2019, showing a 2.9-fold difference between these years. In 2020, edible brassicas shipments from Ukraine abroad totaled 4 775 t, marking a 54.3% decrease year-over-year. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 10 443 t. The most significant growth occurred in 2018, with exports surging by 134.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Belarus, Poland, and Romania were the leading destinations for Ukraine's edible brassicas exports in kind. Belarus accounted for 62.9% of exports, Poland for 13.2%, and Romania for 8.5%. Together, these three countries represented 84.6% of total export flows.

From 2017 to 2020, three main markets—North Macedonia, Albania, and Uzbekistan—together accounted for 79.3% of total edible brassicas imports in kind to Ukraine.

Edible brassicas deliveries to Ukraine increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 9 367 K $ US, reflecting a sharp 39.4% rise over the past year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports surged by 232.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 49.3%.

Throughout 2017 to 2020, North Macedonia, Italy, and the Netherlands formed the core of Ukraine's edible brassicas imports in value terms. North Macedonia accounted for 38.1% of imports, Italy for 16.7%, and the Netherlands for 11.7%. Together, these three countries represented 66.5% of total import flows.
