From 2018 to 2024, Myanmar's dried pigeon pea market was characterized by a strong shift toward exports, which surged from 25.8 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 289 thousand tonnes in 2024. This dramatic growth was primarily driven by favorable trade policies, notably India's extension of its duty-free import policy for pigeon peas until March 2026, which secured a key export destination. Concurrently, rising global consumer preference for plant-based proteins bolstered external demand, with Myanmar cementing its position as the world's largest exporter of dried pigeon peas by 2022.

Domestic production volumes gradually declined over the period, falling from 358.5 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 299 thousand tonnes in 2023. This decrease was influenced by adverse climatic events, including extensive flooding in 2024 that damaged millions of hectares of agricultural land, threatening output. While government farm loans provided some support to pulses growers in 2020, global supply chain disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic also introduced challenges for production and trade logistics in the earlier years.

The combination of rising exports and falling production led to a sharp contraction in the domestic market volume, which shrank from 332.7 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 52.5 thousand tonnes in 2023. The market structure was shaped by established major exporters, including state-owned and private companies like AGRI FORTUNE PTE LTD, with the Myanmar Pulses, Beans, Maize and Sesame Seeds Merchants Association actively influencing trade dynamics. Export prices recovered from lows of around $0.35 per kg in 2018, reaching up to $2.46 per kg by 2024, reflecting improved international market conditions.
