Between 2018 and 2020, the domestic market for dried shelled chickpeas in Myanmar expanded by over 18%, reaching 458.6 thousand tons. This growth occurred despite a decline in annual production, as a sharp reduction in exports—from 147.7 thousand tons to 23.4 thousand tons—made more supply available for local consumption.

From 2021 onward, the market size contracted, falling to 405.6 thousand tons by 2023. Production continued to decrease each year, while exports stabilized at a low level, which limited the volume remaining for the domestic market.

Myanmar's production of dried shelled chickpeas declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 482.0 thousand tons, which was 3.5% lower than in 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 8.5%, averaging an annual decrease of 2.9%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 534.6 thousand tons. The largest year-over-year decline occurred in 2019 at 6.6%, while the biggest increase was in 2018 at 1.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, the three largest markets for Myanmar's dried shelled chickpea exports in volume terms were India, China, and Pakistan. Together, they accounted for 78.7% of total export flows.

The market displayed an unstable trend during this period. Exports peaked in 2018 and hit their lowest point in 2020, with a 7.9-fold gap between these years.
