Earlier Report Observations

Cassava production in ECOWAS reached 102.7 million tons in 2018, supported by entrepreneurial initiatives in Benin that aimed to establish new starch processing plants and attract investment into the sector. The market volume then declined to 96.6 million tons in 2019.

A recovery began in 2020, with steady growth lifting production to 98.8 million tons that year, then to 103.3 million tons in 2021 and 108.5 million tons in 2022.

Output further increased to 111.9 million tons in 2023, driven by the entry of new processing companies in Cameroon that expanded production capacity for cassava derivatives and sought international clients. By 2024, export authorizations for cassava products in Benin and a growing global preference for gluten-free cassava flour reinforced the market's upward trajectory.
