Earlier Report Observations

Production of dried shelled peas in Eastern Europe increased from 3.54 million tons in 2018 to 4.57 million tons in 2023, despite a slight dip in 2019. This growth was propelled by the entry of new regional exporters like Altai Krai and Novosibirsk Oblast, which expanded their output to meet rising external demand. Export opportunities widened significantly after India imposed protective tariffs on dried pea imports in 2017, redirecting global trade flows. Later, trade restrictions on Canadian peas in key markets like China and India further opened doors for Eastern European suppliers. Domestically, government support programs offering subsidies and funding for modernization encouraged farmers to increase pea cultivation.

The domestic market volume followed a different path. It rose from 1.68 million tons in 2018 to a peak of 2.65 million tons in 2021, partly because the COVID-19 pandemic boosted demand for plant-based proteins. However, from 2022 onward, market volume contracted, plummeting to 1.76 million tons in 2023. This sharp drop coincided with a surge in exports, which more than doubled from 2021 to 2023. The export boom was fueled by growing worldwide pea consumption, which jumped 11% in 2024, and by specific regulatory changes such as new certification and labeling requirements that helped Eastern European peas comply with international standards. Meanwhile, consumer shifts toward plant-based diets sustained underlying demand.
