Earlier Report Observations

The European market for dried shelled cow peas displayed considerable volatility over the 2018–2023 period. Starting from a high of 39 199 t in 2018, the market volume contracted sharply the following year before recovering somewhat in 2020.

Domestic production remained relatively stable throughout, ranging between 23 300 t and 23 700 t annually. Consequently, the fluctuations in total market size were primarily driven by changes in trade. Imports fell markedly from 16 864 t in 2018 to 10 448 t in 2019, a key driver of that year's market contraction. While imports recovered in subsequent years, they did not return to the 2018 level, and varying export volumes added further volatility.

The market reached another peak of 36 340 t in 2022, largely due to a surge in imports to 14 244 t. However, this was followed by a drop to 31 315 t in 2023 as imports fell again and exports increased. Overall, the market trended downward from its 2018 level, ending the period 20% smaller.
