The market volume for fresh or chilled beans in Europe stood at 1.4 million tons in 2018, then dropped to 1.2 million tons in 2019. In 2020, it recovered slightly to 1.25 million tons, as the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily affected demand for fresh produce, although long-term consumption trends for fresh vegetables like green beans had been declining in major producing countries such as Spain.

A significant rebound to 1.43 million tons occurred in 2021. However, in 2022 the market contracted sharply to 1.2 million tons, driven by a documented 18.7% drop in fresh green bean consumption in Spain, alongside rising prices for fresh vegetables and a continued consumer shift towards more convenient processed or frozen alternatives. The market stabilized at 1.22 million tons in 2023, with ongoing supply chain challenges and inflation pressuring the fresh segment.

By 2024, the market entered a phase of recovery, with European green bean consumption estimated around 7 million tons, supported by investments in cold chain logistics, packaging technology, and stronger consumer interest in organic and plant-based diets.

After a two-year decline, Europe's bean production increased. In 2020, Europe produced 1 070 K t of beans, showing little change from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production decreased by 15.6%, which translates to an annualized decline of 5.5%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 1 065 K t, while the largest year-on-year drop occurred in 2018 at 9.7%.
