From 2018 to 2023, the dried shelled bean market in Mauritania showed relative stability, with annual market volume fluctuating between 21 571 t and 22 135 t. Domestic production remained steady at around 21 700 t per year, while imports, though minimal, emerged in 2019 and peaked at 383 t in 2022 before receding.

In 2023, the introduction of two new local bean varieties, FAREI Bean Selection 1 (FBS1) and FBS2, aimed to enable higher yields and significantly reduce import dependence. This coincided with a sharp drop in imports to 124 t that year from 383 t in 2022, aligning with the policy objective. Annual consumption was estimated at approximately 21 000 t, matching the observed market size.

For 2024, a rise in customs duties on imported vegetables at the Guerguerat border post affected the supply and prices of beans in markets like Nouakchott and Nouadhibou. Bean imports increased to 275 t, remaining below the 2022 peak. Regional trade flows and high profit margins applied by intermediaries were also noted as factors influencing market conditions.
