Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2021, the Swedish dried egg market volume increased from 1 309 t to 1 435 t. This growth occurred despite recurring avian flu outbreaks that constrained production capacity. The market was underpinned by the sole domestic producer Källbergs, which used Swedish eggs, and updated traceability rules that improved supply chain control. A weaker Swedish krona in 2019 may have encouraged exports, but in 2020-2021, reduced export volumes contributed to higher domestic availability.

The market collapsed to 966 t in 2022 and further to 815 t in 2023. Severe supply shortages driven by persistent avian influenza and salmonella outbreaks at major egg producers sharply limited available volume. Concurrently, feed and energy cost increases pushed consumer egg prices up by 31% between February 2022 and February 2023, dampening demand. Both production and imports of dried eggs fell, while exports remained elevated, intensifying the domestic shortfall.

Entering 2024, new egg labeling regulations came into force, and consumer preference for Swedish eggs reached 82%. However, continued avian flu impact and product recalls due to salmonella indicate ongoing market volatility, with EU-wide egg prices rising 26% in late 2024 due to persistent supply constraints.
