The Swedish processed liquid milk market volume contracted significantly from over 812 thousand tons in 2018 to around 627 thousand tons in 2024. After a drop in 2019, a minor recovery occurred in 2020, but the overall trend remained downward.

From 2021, a 4% decline in per capita dairy consumption and a sharp increase in exports, especially of milk powder and whey, reduced domestic availability. Exports more than doubled in 2022, pulling the market size down to 670 thousand tons.

In 2023, higher packaging fees under producer responsibility and climate adaptation investments raised production costs and consumer prices, dampening volume demand. Concurrently, lower milk production due to a reduced number of inseminated cows constrained supply.
