From 2018 to 2023, Iran's dates production experienced a steady contraction, falling from 1.4 million tons to 971 thousand tons. This decline began in 2019 when water shortages and reduced palm yields directly lowered harvest volumes, contributing to higher domestic prices. Despite the shrinking production base, the country maintained a strong export position, shipping between 239 and 348 thousand tons annually.

The resilience of exports was supported by a focus on meeting international food standards and improving packaging quality, which helped preserve access to key markets in Europe and Asia. Furthermore, the entry of new companies and reputable brands into the packaging and export sector strengthened the industry's outward orientation. Internally, seasonal demand peaks during Ramadan influenced price dynamics, but overall domestic market volume followed the downward trend in production.

Iran's date production volume declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 1 238 thousand tonnes of dates, marking a 5.4% drop from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 2.9%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.0%. The highest output was recorded in 2018 at 1 357 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 12.9%.

Iran's date production value also fell for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 1 084 million US dollars, a 6.7% decrease year-over-year. From 2017 to 2020, production value dropped by 8.7%, with an average annual decline of 3.0%. The peak value occurred in 2018 at 1 499 million US dollars, which experienced the largest increase of 26.2%, while 2019 saw the steepest decline of 22.4%.

Exports dates from Iran

In 2020, Iran exported 338.4 thousand tonnes of dates, a 41.4% increase compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 33.5%, with an average annual growth rate of 10.1%. The lowest export volume was in 2019 at 239.3 thousand tonnes, which also recorded the largest decline of 21.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, Iran's date exports in volume were spread across a diverse range of partner countries. India accounted for 18.5% of exports, Pakistan for 17.6%, and Kazakhstan for 11.2%, with these three countries together making up just 47.2% of total export flows.

In 2020, Iran exported dates worth 296.5 million US dollars, a significant 39.4% rise from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, export value increased by 18.4%, translating to an average annual growth rate of 5.8%. The lowest value was in 2019 at 212.8 million US dollars, which saw the largest decline of 37.1%, while the peak was in 2018 at 338.3 million US dollars.

Over the 2017-2020 period, Iran's date exports in value terms were not highly concentrated. India represented 19.9% of export value, Pakistan 16.2%, and Kazakhstan 9.4%, with these three countries collectively accounting for only 45.6% of total export flows.
