The market volume for watermelons and melons in Iran showed considerable volatility from 2018 to 2023. It expanded by 18% in 2019, reaching 1 748 thousand tonnes, before entering a sustained downward trend that brought it to a low of 706 thousand tonnes in 2022.

A partial rebound followed in 2023, with the domestic market growing 16% to 816 thousand tonnes. This movement corresponded with a peak in production of 2 648 thousand tonnes in 2019 and a general rise in exports through 2022.

In 2020, Iran produced 2 570 thousand tons of watermelons and melons, marking a 2.9% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production fell by 18.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of -6.5%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 2 411 thousand tons, which saw the largest decline of 23.3%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the largest increase of 9.8%.

Exports watermelons and melons from Iran

In 2020, Iran exported 913.9 thousand tons of watermelons and melons, a 1.6% increase from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 5.4%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 1.8%. The peak export volume occurred in 2018 at 931.7 thousand tons, which also recorded the largest increase of 7.5%. In 2019, exports saw the largest decline of 3.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey were the primary destinations for Iran's watermelon and melon exports in kind. Iraq accounted for 57.0% of exports, the United Arab Emirates for 20.5%, and Turkey for 6.3%, together making up 83.8% of total exports.

Exports in value, M $ US

Following two years of growth, Iran's watermelon and melon exports in value terms declined in 2020. Exports totaled 194.4 million US dollars, a significant decrease of 18.7% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 8.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.6%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 239.1 million US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 26.1% in 2018.

During 2017-2020, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey remained the key markets for Iran's watermelon and melon exports in value terms. Iraq represented 59.3% of exports, the United Arab Emirates 19.1%, and Turkey 5.7%, collectively accounting for 84.1% of total export flows.
