Earlier Report Observations

The cottonseed oil-cake market in Iran began the period at 53 211 tons in 2018, with domestic production supported by large oil-extraction facilities such as Leefood, which had a daily processing capacity of 500 tons of oilseeds including cottonseed. Market volume then fell by 11% to 47 425 tons in 2019, as domestic output declined despite higher imports.

A severe market contraction followed in 2020, with volume dropping 42% to 27 560 tons, driven almost entirely by a more than 70% collapse in imports. The market then stabilized between 27 000 and 30 000 tons from 2021 to 2023. During these years, underlying demand from the livestock and poultry sectors for cottonseed cake as a cost-effective protein source remained steady. Concurrent industry efforts focused on improving product quality through pelleting and reducing toxic gossypol content, which helped maintain consumption.
