Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2019, coconut oilcake production in Eastern Africa remained relatively high, supported by substantial government investment in agro-processing infrastructure and the development of plug-and-play agro-industrial parks in Ethiopia, which created a favorable environment for private sector engagement. However, in 2020, a sharp contraction occurred as challenges in the economically linked specialty coffee market negatively impacted oilseed sectors, reducing production to 29 203 t and market volume to 26 742 t.

The partial recovery to 30 219 t in 2021 was constrained by persistent bottlenecks, including a lack of improved seed varieties and agro-chemical supply issues, coupled with poor market infrastructure. Although 2022 saw the emergence of new processing facilities and continued policy support for investment in Ethiopia, these developments did not immediately translate into higher output, with production dipping slightly to 29 851 t, indicating a lag before new capacities could fully influence the market.

By 2023, increased domestic demand for edible oils provided a underlying stimulus for the oilseed sector, but this was offset by global supply chain disruptions which pressured production, leading to a further decline to 27 642 t. Moving into 2024, regional efforts intensified, with Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania launching seed multiplication programs, import substitution policies, and regulatory adjustments aimed at boosting oilseed production and processing, though their effect on the coconut oilcake market remains to be seen.
