The market then contracted further, falling to 34 199 tonnes in 2023 and 30 012 tonnes in 2024.

In 2023, logistical constraints and limited availability of high-quality materials such as Egyptian cotton and silk hampered production and import flows, reducing overall market supply. Concurrently, Italian consumer preferences shifted toward luxury bedding, organic cotton, and online purchases, which supported demand in premium segments but did not reverse the overall volume contraction.

In value terms, the market grew from $280.4 million in 2020 to $300.7 million in 2022, reflecting a shift toward higher-priced luxury products, before dropping sharply to $199.7 million in 2023 due to the volume decline. Domestic production fell from 26 994 tonnes in 2018 to 10 059 tonnes in 2024, contributing to the reduced market size.
