The Italian market for tarpaulins, awnings and sunblinds experienced significant growth from 12 451 tons in 2018 to a peak of 15 146 tons in 2021, largely driven by sustained fiscal incentives. The introduction of a 50% tax deduction for solar shading installations via the 2018 Budget Law stimulated consumer demand, supporting market expansion into 2019. Although volume contracted to 11 592 tons in 2020, the government formally established the Ecobonus scheme in August of that year, defining new technical requirements and spending limits. This framework enabled a sharp recovery in 2021 when the Ecobonus was extended at 50% with a confirmed expenditure ceiling of €60 000.
Regulatory simplifications and evolving incentive schemes characterized the market from 2022 onward. The 2022 VEPA law streamlined the installation of removable awnings and tarpaulins by eliminating the need for a building permit, while updated free-building regulations reinforced earlier permissions. Market volume, however, fell to 13 848 tons in 2022. The following year, despite the prolongation of the 50% deduction and the availability of the Superbonus 110% for combined interventions, the market contracted sharply to 9 603 tons. A modest rebound to 9 959 tons occurred in 2024 following the 'Salva Casa' decree, which classified awnings and bioclimatic pergolas as free-building works, further removing administrative barriers for installations.
