The cosmetics and skin care market in Greece, measured in value terms, contracted from 318.9 million US dollars in 2018 to 276.1 million in 2020. This was followed by a modest recovery to 281.4 million in 2021. Over this four-year period, the market declined by nearly 12% from its starting point, with the steepest drop occurring in 2020.

Domestic production value followed a similar trajectory, falling from 253.7 million in 2018 to 242.3 million in 2020 before rising to 260.9 million in 2021. Concurrently, export values grew steadily from 162.3 million to 209.9 million, while import values dipped in 2020 before increasing again, reducing the net impact on the overall market size.

From 2022 onward, international trade activity remained robust. The value of imports climbed from 243.0 million to 309.7 million in 2024, and exports increased from 195.0 million to 261.7 million over the same two-year span, indicating sustained flows of goods.

Cosmetics and skin care production in Greece has declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, output was valued at 242.3 million US dollars, marking a slight decrease of 2.5% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 6.9%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.3%. The peak was reached in 2018 at 253.7 million US dollars, which also saw the largest annual increase of 11.9%.

Exports cosmetics and skin care from Greece

After rising for two years, the volume of cosmetics and skin care exports from Greece fell in 2020. Exports totaled 20 666 tonnes, showing a modest decline of 4.3% from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 25.2%, equivalent to an annualized growth rate of 7.8%. The highest volume was recorded in 2019 at 21 599 tonnes, which also experienced the largest annual increase of 29.5%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France were key buyers of Greek cosmetics and skin care in volume terms, accounting for 22.1%, 15.1%, and 7.5% of exports, respectively. However, their combined share made up only 44.8% of total exports, with the remaining 55.2% spread across many other trading partners.

Greece's cosmetics and skin care exports in value terms have increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 180.2 million US dollars, reflecting a moderate rise of 3.1% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 25.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 7.8%.

The value-based export structure from 2017 to 2020 highlights a diverse range of partners. The United Kingdom, Cyprus, and the United States accounted for 13.7%, 12.3%, and 8.2% of exports in value, respectively, but together they represented only 34.2% of total flows. The remaining 65.8% was distributed among numerous smaller markets.

Imports cosmetics and skin care to Greece

Following a two-year increase, Greece's cosmetics and skin care import volume dropped in 2020. Imports were recorded at 11 601 tonnes, indicating a significant decline of 16.1% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 5.6%, with an average annual decline of 1.9%. The peak volume was in 2019 at 13 821 tonnes, while the largest annual increase occurred in 2018 at 11.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, France, Germany, and Poland were the primary sources for Greece's cosmetics and skin care imports in volume terms, representing 28.0%, 21.5%, and 8.7% of imports, respectively. Together, these three countries accounted for 58.3% of total import flows.
