Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for chemically unmodified maize (corn) oil in Oman contracted from 22 466 metric tons in 2018 to 17 776 metric tons in 2023. This overall decline was marked by a sharp drop of 16.9% in 2020, followed by relative stabilization in 2021.

In 2020, the Omani Ministry of Commerce and Industry launched the 'Made in Oman' campaign to promote domestic non-oil products, which could have supported local vegetable oil production over time. The market then saw a modest recovery in 2022, growing 6.9% to 18 754 metric tons. This expansion was partly driven by a regulatory ban on the import, marketing, and production of partially hydrogenated oils, which shifted consumer demand toward alternatives like corn oil.

The market volume fell again in 2023 to 17 776 metric tons. This decrease coincided with Jordan's decision to re-ban the export and re-export of vegetable oils, including corn oil, which likely constrained regional supplies and contributed to a significant reduction in Oman's imports.
