Earlier Report Observations

The Asian market for corn oil and fractions grew from 943.0 thousand tons in 2018 to a peak of 1 016.6 thousand tons in 2020, fueled by robust import demand from Middle Eastern countries such as Kuwait, UAE, and Saudi Arabia. Production increases and higher imports supported this expansion, even as regulatory hurdles around food safety and labeling posed challenges for smaller producers.

A sharp price increase for corn oil in the United States, from $0.93 per kg in 2020 to $1.45 in 2021, raised costs and contributed to a market contraction to 966.1 thousand tons in 2021. The market rebounded to 1 006.5 thousand tons in 2022 as health-conscious consumers increasingly sought non-GMO and healthier cooking oils. However, in 2023, the market dipped again to 977.5 thousand tons, pressured by India's rapidly growing maize ethanol demand, which diverted corn away from oil production.

Technological improvements, including enzyme solutions to boost oil recovery at ethanol plants, and government programs like India's National Mission on Edible Oils, aimed at enhancing domestic oilseed output, began influencing production economics and supply-side dynamics during the latter part of the period.
