Earlier Report Observations

The condom market in Russia between 2018 and 2021 showed considerable volatility. Starting at 546.5 million units in 2018, the market was highly import-dependent due to the perceived uncompetitiveness of domestic brands. A decline to 477.4 million units in 2019 coincided with falling pharmacy sales of major brands like Contex and Vizit. Despite a noted trend away from barrier contraceptives, the market volume recovered to 528.8 million units in 2020. This was followed by a drop to 485.5 million units in 2021, mirroring a reported 7.2% sales decline linked to shifting consumer preferences and economic factors.

A major shift occurred in 2022 when the exit of Reckitt, which held an estimated 60% market share, triggered panic buying and drove the market to a peak of 636.4 million units. Later that year, however, rising prices and the introduction of mandatory digital labeling by the Ministry of Industry and Trade began to suppress consumption. High prices continued to dampen demand in 2023, contributing to a sharp market contraction to 480.8 million units, with pharmacy sales falling to a five-year low. The downward trend persisted in 2024 as the market shrank further to 408.0 million units, with consumers economizing and domestic production declining.

By 2025, domestic production showed a slight increase to 31.2 million units. Throughout the period, the market remained structurally reliant on imports, with Russian brands continuing to face challenges in matching the quality of foreign products, while regulatory measures like digital labeling added a new layer of market control.
