Earlier Report Observations

The German condom market volume contracted from 513.5 million units in 2018 to 453 million units in 2019, despite rising usage among young adults and Durex's introduction of discreet packaging to lower purchase barriers. Market concentration remained high, with three brands controlling 90% of sales, and new entrants like Playboy through a partnership in 2019 did not reverse the decline.

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 caused a surge in demand, but global production shortages from factory closures, such as at Karex in Malaysia, constrained supply and drove market volume down to 366.1 million units. Online sales grew significantly. By 2021, volume fell further to 227.6 million units amid continued shifts toward latex-free, vegan, and sustainable products, exemplified by Fair Squared's eco-friendly condoms and Durex's new stimulating gel lines.

In 2022, Durex launched the non-latex 'Real Feeling' series, reinforcing the trend toward sustainable options, while public health initiatives distributed free condoms. The market showed stability in 2023 as domestic manufacturer Ritex achieved record revenue and the brand Einhorn strengthened its position with eco-friendly branding, though the overall market remained consolidated.
