Earlier Report Observations

Market volume for concentrated milk and cream in Africa grew from 212 000 t in 2018 to 236 000 t in 2019. This increase was supported by a 4.8% rise in the intake of unprocessed milk the previous year, attributed to lower raw milk prices, and by the expansion of processing capacity following Cape Harvest Food Group's acquisition of Ladismith Cheese Company. Volume then dropped to 198 000 t in 2020.

A sharp recovery followed in 2021, with the market reaching 261 000 t. This surge was driven by the end of COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, which revived consumer demand, particularly for value-added dairy products like flavored milk. However, volume fell again to 190 000 t in 2022 as increased production costs led to an 11.3% rise in consumer prices for milk, eggs, and cheese, reducing consumption volumes.

The market rebounded to 236 000 t in 2023, aided by higher imports and a strategic shift among milk processors toward more profitable cheese production within the concentrated products segment. During the period, the market consolidated, with the number of producer-distributors falling 11% from 2019 to 2024 while milk output per producer rose 52%, and consumer preferences increasingly included plant-based alternatives.
