From 2018 to 2023, the coffee market volume in Mozambique fluctuated, reaching a low of 959 tons in 2020 before recovering to over 1 100 tons in 2022. This movement was primarily driven by changes in import volumes, which fell sharply in 2020 and then rebounded strongly by 2022, while domestic production remained stable at around 800 tons annually. Exports, though growing steadily from a very low base, had a marginal impact on the total market size during this period.

A pivotal development occurred in 2023 when Mozambique joined the International Coffee Organization (ICO). This accession opened doors for technical assistance and access to more demanding international markets, directly contributing to the rise in coffee exports to 9.3 tons that year. Concurrently, the government and local associations like the Mozambican Coffee Growers Association (AMOCAFÉ) began implementing strategies to strengthen the production chain, including technical training and the promotion of sustainable practices, which laid a foundation for potential future production growth.

Building on the ICO membership, the sector secured export contracts with international companies such as Costa Coffee in 2024. The government set clear targets to increase the number of coffee producers, aiming to expand output and leverage the country's favorable agro-ecological conditions. These concerted efforts are focused on diversifying agricultural exports and enhancing the socio-economic impact of the coffee value chain.
