The Cambodian coffee market volume grew from 932 tons in 2018 to 1 126 tons in 2020, a period marked by the doubling of coffee cultivation area in Mondulkiri province to 206 hectares, driven by private enterprises and smallholders adopting organic methods. This expansion, alongside competitive pressure among local brands, supported rising imports and laid the foundation for market growth.

After a contraction to 971 tons in 2021, the market rebounded strongly, reaching 1 634 tons by 2023. The subsequent surge reflected a broader recovery and increasing consumption, with import volumes climbing steadily through the period.

In 2024, coffee imports rose to 1 758 tons, influenced by a Vietnam-Cambodia trade promotion program launched in August to reduce technical barriers and facilitate cross-border goods flow, including processed coffee. Concurrently, a severe drought in Vietnam—a key supplier—constrained robusta exports, while intense competition among over 300 cafes in Phnom Penh, featuring foreign chains like Café Amazon, spurred product diversification and innovation.

After two years of growth, Cambodia's cross-border shipments of coffee, husks, skins, and substitutes declined in 2020. The country exported 2.2 t that year, reflecting a sharp contraction of 63.8% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 58.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of -25.3%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 6.0 t, while the largest annual increase occurred in 2018 at 13.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Russia, the United States, and Asia (not elsewhere specified) were the key destinations for Cambodia's exports of coffee, husks, skins, and substitutes in kind. Russia accounted for 58.3% of exports, the United States for 17.8%, and Asia for 11.8%, together representing 87.9% of total export flows.

Between 2017 and 2020, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand were the main sources for Cambodia's imports of coffee, husks, skins, and substitutes in kind. Vietnam accounted for 36.9% of imports, Laos for 24.9%, and Thailand for 17.8%, together making up 79.5% of total import flows.

The country imported 3 632 000 US dollars worth of these products that year, marking an 11.1% decrease from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, import values increased by 16.4%, equating to an annualized rate of 5.2%. The highest import value was recorded in 2019 at 4 085 000 US dollars, while the largest annual increase occurred in 2018 at 17.9%.
