The coconut market in Myanmar experienced a sustained contraction from 2018 to 2021, with volume falling from 1 413 thousand tonnes to 1 220 thousand tonnes, a drop of over 190 thousand tonnes or approximately 13.6% across the three-year period.

This downward trend reversed in 2022, when the market grew slightly to 1 236 thousand tonnes, followed by a stronger increase to 1 293 thousand tonnes in 2023, marking a partial recovery toward earlier levels.

Throughout the observed period, the market remained almost entirely supplied by domestic production, with negligible import or export activity influencing total availability.

Myanmar's coconut production declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 1 252 thousand tonnes of coconuts, marking a 1.9% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 2.2%, which translates to an average annual increase of 0.7%. The highest output was recorded in 2018 at 1 414 thousand tonnes, with the largest annual increase of 15.4% that same year. Conversely, the steepest decline occurred in 2019, when production fell by 9.8%.

The market displayed volatility during the observed period. Export volumes reached their lowest point in 2019 and peaked in 2017, with the peak being 31 times higher than the trough. In 2020, Myanmar's cross-border shipments of coconuts totaled 182 tonnes, showing a sharp year-on-year increase of 44.3%. The minimum volume was recorded in 2019 at 126 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 90.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Thailand, India, and China were the top buyers of coconuts from Myanmar, accounting for 93.6% of total exports in volume. Thailand led with 45.3% of exports, followed by India at 31.1%, and China at 17.3%.
