Earlier Report Observations

The coconut market volume in Timor-Leste began a steady increase from 29 880 tons in 2018 to 31 202 tons in 2019. This initial growth was aligned with the government's strategic plan to transition national agriculture from subsistence to market-oriented production, which included optimizing coconut output among other crops.

Market volume then stabilized around 31 200 tons between 2020 and 2022. During this period, the sector benefited from international cooperation, including virtual training for agricultural officials on cultivation techniques and a technical cooperation agreement signed in 2022 to develop business opportunities and diversify coconut-derived products for international markets.

A significant expansion occurred in 2023, with market volume rising to 33 012 tons. This growth was directly supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries preparing 25 hectares of land in Viqueque for new coconut plantations, aiming to produce 30 thousand seedlings to increase production capacity. Government policies continued to assist farmers with measures to boost output quality and quantity, while initiatives in 2024, such as the state purchase of domestic agricultural products, further reinforced the internal market for coconuts.
