From 2018 to 2020, the coconut market volume in Indonesia declined from 16 403 thousand tonnes to 15 786 thousand tonnes. This reduction coincided with a steady increase in coconut product exports, which had grown 15% for coconut sugar between 2014 and 2018 and saw overall coconut exports rise, peaking at 1 018 thousand tonnes in 2020 and thereby reducing domestic availability.

The market rebounded to 17 146 thousand tonnes in 2021, supported by the government's low-interest KUR financing program for coconut farmers and businesses, which encouraged expansion and innovation. In 2022, Indonesia solidified its position as the world's largest coconut producer with output of 17 190 thousand tonnes and exports worth USD 1.25 billion, while state policies promoted product diversification and added value. By 2023, market volume held steady at 17 103 thousand tonnes despite further export growth.

Government initiatives to develop the coconut sector as a national economic lever continued into 2024, focusing on quality seedlings and downstream product diversification to sustain production and export performance.

After two years of decline, coconut production in Indonesia rebounded in 2021, reaching 18,100 thousand tonnes—a 7.7% increase from the previous year. Over the 2018–2021 period, production grew by 5.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.9%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2020 at 16,800 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 1.2%.

Indonesia's coconut production value rose for the second consecutive year in 2021, reaching 8,441 million US dollars—a 28.6% increase compared to 2020. From 2018 to 2021, production value increased by 18.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 5.8%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 5,753 million US dollars, which also experienced the largest decline of 19.4%.

In 2021, Indonesia's coconut export volume reached 956 thousand tonnes, marking a moderate decline of 6.1% from the previous year. Between 2018 and 2021, exports grew by 37%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 11.1%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 657 thousand tonnes, while the highest was in 2020 at 1,018 thousand tonnes, which saw the largest increase of 55.0%.

From 2018 to 2021, Malaysia (32.5% of export volume), China (30.4%), and Thailand (15.7%) were the top buyers of Indonesian coconuts, together accounting for 78.6% of total export volume.

The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 222.4 million US dollars, which saw the largest decline of 23.7%, while the largest increase of 78.9% occurred in 2020.
