Earlier Report Observations

The coconut market in Samoa showed remarkable stability from 2018 to 2023, with annual production holding steady at 63 625 t. Market size, calculated as production plus imports minus exports, fluctuated minimally between 62 637 t and 62 972 t over this period. In 2018, the market benefited from improved export capabilities when Samoa Agromarketing gained government approval to use the state-owned pack house in Savai’i and obtained HACCP certification, facilitating coconut and taro exports.

By 2024, coconut exports had declined to 546 t. That year, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries launched a nationwide coconut replanting programme, opening eight new seedling nurseries to replace aging trees and address a critical issue where about 80% of coconut trees were old. Simultaneously, a $30 million Chinese-funded processing factory for nonu juice was established in Tanumalala, with plans to export 25 containers, encouraging farmers to expand planting to meet growing Asian market demand.
