Earlier Report Observations
Coconut cultivation in Guatemala is primarily located in the Pacific and Caribbean coastal regions, where the crop adapts well to sandy and saline soils. Production serves both local consumption and export of derived products like oil, coconut water, and fiber, establishing a stable base for the market.
From 2018 to 2023, the domestic market volume for coconuts experienced notable shifts. After starting at 17 471 t in 2018, it contracted to 14 807 t in 2019 and further to 13 649 t in 2020. The decline slowed in 2021, with the market stabilizing around 13 370 t. A strong rebound occurred in 2022, pushing the market volume up to 18 035 t, but it fell again to 13 695 t in 2023.
These movements resulted from varying levels of production and export activity. Production remained at 18 000 t in 2018 and 2019, dropped to 14 400 t for 2020 and 2021, returned to 18 000 t in 2022, and dipped slightly to 17 735 t in 2023. Concurrently, export volumes fluctuated sharply, influencing the amount of product available for domestic consumption.
